Island Wheels is committed to supporting homeless shelter programs throughout Hawaii by transforming vehicle donations into essential resources for those in need. Our community partners operate vital services such as emergency shelter beds, transitional housing, and outreach teams that offer support to individuals experiencing homelessness. With rising living costs and limited affordable housing, our goal is to address this urgent need by channeling funds from donated vehicles directly into these life-changing programs.
Each donation has the power to make a significant difference. A single vehicle can help fund numerous shelter nights, housing rent subsidies, or essential supplies for outreach teams. By choosing to donate your vehicle, you are investing in the well-being and dignity of our most vulnerable community members, enabling them to find their path toward stability and independence.
Programs your donation funds
- Overnight emergency shelter beds
- Transitional housing (30-90 day stays)
- Rapid-rehousing vouchers

- Family homeless shelters with childcare
↗Real impact, real numbers
Your generous donation can have a profound impact on the lives of those experiencing homelessness. For instance, a vehicle sale yielding $1,500 can provide approximately 40 to 60 shelter nights at partner shelters, as typical bed-night costs range between $25 and $50. Alternatively, it can cover one family's rent subsidy for a month in transitional housing, or supply a street outreach team with necessary materials for six months. With larger donations, like $2,500 or $5,000, the effect multiplies significantly, funding even more nights of shelter or resources for families transitioning out of homelessness. Every dollar counts and directly contributes to restoring hope in our community.
How we vet recipient partners
We take the selection of our partner nonprofits seriously. To ensure accountability and integrity, we prefer organizations that meet HUD Continuum-of-Care standards and maintain a low shelter-to-housed transition rate below 20%. This criterion indicates that fewer individuals return to homelessness after receiving assistance. Additionally, all partners must have a verifiable Form 990 and demonstrate a program-expense ratio of 75% or higher, ensuring that the majority of funds directly support their essential services.
How proceeds flow
When you donate a vehicle to Island Wheels, the proceeds from the auction sale, after covering towing and processing costs, typically net around 70-80% to our nonprofit partners. This amount is then allocated according to the program expense ratio of each partner, maximizing the impact of your donation and ensuring that the vast majority of funds are directed towards providing critical services for the homeless community.
Hawaii recipient landscape
Hawaii faces unique challenges with homelessness, including high living costs and limited resources for those in need. Local shelters and transitional housing programs work tirelessly to support individuals and families affected by these issues, but they often require additional funding to meet the demand. By donating through Island Wheels, you are directly contributing to local efforts that provide essential services, helping to bridge the gap in state-level funding and support, and empowering individuals to find stable housing and support.
